Legacy.

In 1884, the land that would be Red Rose Hill was carved out of  Dakota Territory next to the house of famous physician and local celebrity Valentine Mc Gilicuddy. Some time between 1886 and 1888, the newcomer and aspiring architect William Fremont Hall designed the  graceful hipped roof and whimsical profile of a "Queen Anne" style Victorian home for the land's new owner, A. J. Woods.  Popular tradition says that the house was completed in 1892, but a recently discovered message on a preserved wooden board dates the completion to 1889, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in Rapid City.

By the time Woods sold the house in 1895, William Freemont Hall was well on his way to becoming one of the most prominent architects of South Dakota, even eventually designing the new courthouse for Pennington County.

The house's new owner, Charles Wellington Brown, would eventually become the 12th mayor of Rapid City, and founded the fair city's first library. His wife Adella was the first gracious host, with legendary dinner parties whose stories survive to this day, and their daughter's marriage in 1912 marks the first wedding celebrated at Red Rose Hill.

By 1936, Hall's daughter owned the house and Hall himself returned to subdivide it into a series of apartments. Time obscures our tale until 1977, where a surviving letter details that the historic home had been re-designed to accommodate apartments.

In the fall of 2025, the house was again on the market,  meticulously preserved by the couple that had even restored the original chimney with period accurate bricks. In December of 2025, the house was purchased by Elizabeth and Dr. Paul Stover, the first Lakota Chiropractor to join the remarkable team at Oyate Health.

Dr. Paul and Elizabeth now invite you to join us, to tell us the stories you know, and together, we will write the next chapter of Red Rose Hill.

Here's to the 142nd year of Red Rose Hill!
